New Funding from the Academy of Finland
Academy of Finland granted 450 000 euros for a project of professor Juha Töyräs (Multimodal Arthroscopic Imaging of Cartilage Injuries and Degeneration). In a short public description of the project it was summarized as follows:
Detection, grading and delineation of cartilage lesions are of utmost importance for the success of their surgical repair. However, the inter- and intra-operator reproducibility of traditional arthroscopic evaluation is poor. Quantitative ultrasound and optical (spectroscopy, coherence tomography and fluorescence imaging) techniques are promising methods for arthroscopic evaluation of the structure and properties of articular cartilage and subchondral bone. In this research project these imaging techniques and a conventional arthroscope are combined as a unique multimodality arthroscopic tool and its performance is evaluated in laboratory, with an animal model and in clinical conditions. The first clinically applicable prototype of the instrument has already been constructed and found to provide images with unparallel resolution on both cartilage and bone. The combination of these modalities enables determination of parameters unreachable with any of the techniques alone.22.5.2013, 13:33
